Why Strange Fish?
Some RPG's have fishing mini-games built into them and they frequently make up interesting names for the fish: eiyuden-chronicle-hundred-heroes.fandom.com/wiki/Fish_List for example. I don't really like the mini-games, but very much enjoy the names of the fish. They're delightful. So I decided to make an album called Strange Fish and name a bunch of fish myself.
This album, at its core, is a work of audio collage. I played 1 bit of keyboard on Fizzletailed Sailfish. All of the rest of the sounds are royalty free samples from Splice. Anyone could pay some money, download the same samples and make this album. I think that's great. I decided while working on the first track that in contrast to other albums, I wanted this to be easy and fun. Combining other people's musical ideas in interesting ways is fun, in comparison to coming up with my own which is difficult and time-consuming. I set some simple rules to encourage creativity: don't use samples from the same genre, don't use samples at the same tempo. I dig the result, they're fun eclectic little songs that I find unexpectedly stuck in my head. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.
