The highlight of A Giant Dog’s lockdown happened early on, in April 2020; my bandmate Andrew Cashen and I waited on opposite lines of a conference call, my heart was racing, then we heard the familiar voice: “Hey guys! How are you doing today?” It was Amy Poehler. She was ready to offer creative direction on our next assignment: recording a cover of “Suddenly Seymour” from Little Shop of Horrors, to be featured in Moxie, a movie about a teen feminist movement, directed by Poehler.
In Moxie, a young actress’s audition for the role of Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors turns into a power montage, as the girls infiltrate the school with their zine. “It has to be super heavy and super fast, because these girls are badass.” AGD has had some songs in film and TV, but we’ve never received creative direction from the director themself.
Recording the track was a challenge for a band like ours, as we each went to a separate session with Stuart Sikes, masked, and solitary, we laid down the tracks remotely. But we are thrilled with the result and hope you are too.
Fun fact: Sabrina was in Little Shop of Horrors twice as a teen. First, as an extra, and at 16, as Audrey. If given the chance to audition for Little Shop of Horrors again, Sabrina would go up for the role of The Dentist.
A Giant Dog is raucous ear candy culled from the hook-driven melodies of Slade, the glammy swagger of Marc Bolan, the morbid fantasy of Killer-era Alice Cooper, and the unpredictable wit of Sparks. These songs are by, for, and about the losers, freaks, and outcasts. The lonely. The terminally horny. Boozehounds and party animals.
