Impromptu #31 by Allen Rickel

Completed on June 23rd, 2021, Impromptu #31 started out as an idea for a progression with a single note in each chord falling a half step from its predecessor. Despite the presence of a major key, the descending chromatic notes seem to render the first theme slightly dark. As the theme progresses, the amount of motion increases as the left hand takes on a more active role.

As the second theme is introduced, the tempo slows dramatically and the relative minor key of the first theme comes into play. The melody is slightly melancholy but, again, the quantity of motion increases as the theme evolves.
