Mouthful from The Fall by Anchor End
This song had been in the works for about 5 years. It was constantly in the back of my mind; keeping me up at night. It’s the first song I would strum when I picked up my guitar, and I would hum the melody everywhere I went.
I started writing this about my band’s breakup years ago and not being able to find my own way musically. I’ve written about my asthma before, which I worked in again here.
However, what has been keeping me up recently are the horrible things I see on the news and social media regarding racism. I do have hope though from movements like Black Lives Matter. It changed the meaning of the whole song for me. I have to consciously think about the lyrics in this song not being “feels like a knee is on my neck” instead of “weight is on my chest”, because those images are just engrained in my mind. I know many of us feel someway similarly and we’re all struggling or coping differently; we’re certainly all impacted very differently.
It may be uncomfortable to use your voice and speak out. I’ve tried to use music to do that. If you have a “mouthful”, make sure to get it out, because it’s important. “There’s only so many of them, but so many more of you and me.”
