Other Ways by Andrew Nixon
This recording features 9 piano compositions through which I attempt
a more open and "free" approach to improvisation, as compared to my two previous trio recordings. Playing solo allows for more liberty to be taken with tempo, harmony and form, and thus I did so here.
As is traditional in jazz, each track contains a pre-written compositional idea or "head" which is followed by an improvisation. My hope was to arrive at a personal improvisational style not confined to chord changes but still related to the original idea. The level of departure from the written harmony and/or melody varies from track to track.
Of the 9 tracks, 6 have never been previously recorded. The overall mood is mellow and contemplative, which I believe is reflected nicely in the cover art. Please enjoy the music.
