My Captain from Esteesee by Ange Hardy

Coleridge always approached his new ventures with boundless excitement, a sense of optimism and an idealistic view of how simple they would be. All his endeavours started with light hearted hope but many fell flat because they ended up not being as easy as he had imagined.

Once the ship had left the harbour in the Ancient Mariner it seemed as though their fate was sealed and everything that followed on the voyage was inevitable, the sense of freedom being nothing more than an illusion.

But if the Ancient Mariner is to be seen as an autobiographical portrait of Coleridge I thought it was important to shine a brighter light on those first few lines of cheering and merriment with which the voyage starts.
