the zoo by arlo brooks and molly spear
developed over the course of a year, THE ZOO is an intensely personal amalgamation of musical reference and forms. composed of samples and snippets of demented radio, warped records, (mostly) unidentifiable samples, frantic keyboard beats, fractured guitars and wordless vocals. conceived when arlo solicited a large batch of youtube links from molly's past. he went to work over the course of months creating a collage monster of snipped youtube bits, his altered guitar/vox, effect pedal driven beats, and molly's manipulation of records and radio. side a is a disorienting mishmash of unpredictable source material, referencing 80's TV commercials, steel magnolias, desperate living, clifford, pippi longstocking, re-animator, and god knows what else. the sheer volume of samples in side a may overwhelm or put the listener in a state of mistaken nostalgia. side b continues the sample driven assault into a beat-and-drone based slab of danceable, utterly unpredictable and ever shifting madness. side c dips more heavily into the distorted and noisy process of redialing old bits of our media to recalibrate to a new dawn.
