Tread from Certain Memories by Assistant
‘Tread’ is a bit of disorientating, escalating shoegaze about a haunting of sorts - the discovery that someone is secretly living in your attic. Amazingly, this happened - in 1995, in Enumclaw, a farming town in the US state of Washington. First Amber Dawn heard the sound of "footsteps above me", before eventually discovering there was an intruder living in her loft space, climbing down to enjoy her home when she was out. ‘Tread’ is a vivid re-imagining of the discovery - part horror-story, part meditation on madness. Sung by Anne-Sophie, it builds to a heavy, Mercury-Rev informed din, before the intruder discloses "I live in the space above / there's nothing you can tell me of love".
