His friend found abandoned tape reels in an abandoned house in an abandoned part of town
And took them to his own forgotten apartment

His friend sent them to him and he felt something familiar and honest
She heard the hiss and crackles and couldn’t bear to listen to the voices of long passed ghosts

He saw something in that moment
That she would protest ghosts but not politicians
And how uncomfortable the voices of things long dead
Seemed more heavy than the voices of crooked cowards

Staring at the four corners of that filthy room
Where those magic funeral papers once collected dust
He saw clearly the line between himself and those borders
Collapse forever into something he would never be able to speak

His friend and him played songs to those forgotten reels
And invited others to play along
Knowing that their countries were long a funeral
And that holding each other’s hands was all that made sense anymore….

It is but overlapping exposures,
one outline collapsing into another
the knife of that thief
time
your borders
nervous
crawling
a name signed for no one to read
a date filled for no one to see
all but stamps and flags blazing
an anthem
sorry and sick
rotting
a fire curling into the night

your country was long a funeral
in every corner hanging magic paper

the difference between you and it
simply that you do not celebrate your sickness

lighting small candles at the edge of the ocean
each point of the compass still hanging those magic papers
you see in your warped reflection
the falling tide and seeping edges
your hands still shaking
the photographs still overlapping and folding
your teeth crooked and slowly yellowing


across voids, reaching...
