Parisian saxophonist Thierry Lemaitre (ephemerals, Wolfgang Valbrun) unveils his exciting new project, Biomania and with that, the first single to be released on Folded Music’s Most Least sublabel, is ‘Dinosaur’.
‘Dinosaur’ makes a striking statement right from the start. Its bombastic cinematic soul entrance brings through rolling tom fills, expansive guitar chords, and a huge saxophone solo that wastes no time to grab the listener. The blend of sounds evokes the stylish, eclectic vibe reminiscent of a Tarantino film—channeling that same rebellious energy and cool factor.
This new project comes with a talented ensemble of five musicians. What began as a solo beat-making endeavor during the pandemic has blossomed into a vibrant collective, with the creative prowess of Công Minh Pham on keyboards, the artistic flair of Arthur Links on guitar, the dynamic rhythm of Nicolas Bauer on bass, and the irresistible energy of Benjamin Pellet on drums. The result is a fresh and organic sound that blends soul, vintage hip-hop grooves, and jazz, creating a bridge between arranged beats and live improvised instrumentation. Biomania embodies the connection between home studio intimacy and the exhilaration of the stage, creating a palette that resonates in the biosphere of contemporary music.
Thierry Lemaitre’s musical journey began at age five with the cello, followed by piano, ultimately leading him to the saxophone as a teenager. After winning a prestigious jazz saxophone award, he immersed himself in the vibrant Parisian scene, collaborating with a variety of jazz and soul-funk ensembles.
With an active presence across European stages, Thierry’s multidimensional approach and boundless creativity have established him as a sought-after musician in the industry. His previous projects have garnered accolades from influential platforms like Triple J, KCRW, FIP, BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 1, CLASH and Mixmag, and his sounds have been used in a huge array of sync from ‘Homeland’ to international adverts for Orange, setting the stage for high expectations surrounding this new venture.
Biomania is Thierry Lemaitre’s latest project. Initiated as a solo beat-making venture during the pandemic, the project soon developed in a new direction thanks to the four outstanding Parisian musicians who joined him. Their interplay is fresh and organic, mixing soul vibes, vintage hip-hop grooves, and jazz improv.
