Struggle from Struggle by Black Rock Band
Lively and proud, Black Rock Band from West Arnhem land have been entertaining audiences and inspiring communities around the country since their debut in 2015. The band from the small community of Jabiru in the Northern Territory draws on their deep musical family history and incorporates traditional and contemporary sounds with a steady rock style, singing in both Kunwinjku and English. Their songs are a celebration of culture, connection to country, the fight for social justice and the future they want to create for the next generation of children.
"Struggle is a story about our community, our people - the struggle we face as Indigenous peoples. When we sing ‘make a change’ we are singing to black fellas and white fellas, to everyone, we’ve all got a part to play. It’s about the change we need to make - as a nation, as a community, and every day for ourselves."
With songs like 'Struggle', 'Learning on Country' and their first recording 'Bininj Kunborrk', literally translating to Traditional Song and Dance, the band sing about their families’ cultural richness as well as contemporary social and political issues that reflect their experience as First Nations people.
Drawing on deep musical family history, Black Rock Band incorporate traditional and contemporary sounds with a steady rock style. Black Rock Band are driven to promote change in their community through the songs they sing and the stories they tell; singing about their hopes and hardships, and their connection to country and culture. More than this, the band are fighting for social justice and a better future for the next generation of Indigenous youth and children.
