thought of a life
once lusted for
now i can’t tell
what the lusting was for

badger and heave
the body’s reprieve
lashed to our memory’s
penchant to grieve

o’er the grass we wander in
leave our bodies to the wind
here with memories extending
thoughts aloft on dreams
while tending
to the bodies we will dwell
our lifetimes in

seems that we’ve had
buyer’s remorse
loves we’ve abandoned
on youth’s heady course

spent a whole night
bunked in the trees
fingers and toes
rotten hearts
and scraped knees

in the dark we waded in
naked bodies left to swim
in the warmth of nights unending
crack the rails with skulls
defending
blurry brains that swell
and trouble there within

loot, thieve, and run
my story’s spun
yarns by the yards
just like everyone

relief once found
in long love’s recourse
brave is the one
who succombs to its force

for the care i deign to spurn
wait for other cheeks to turn
carve a path that winds unending
while i while away
pretending
that the thief inside
was lost out in the burn
