Salt Ellipse
Dark hours passing, I lay dreaming
Into my sleep there creeps a calling
As if words upon my ear are falling
Like that Collie dog Lassie
Urging me to rise, rise and follow
Into that hallway, dark, appalling
Feet meet floor, so coldly creaking
Old floorboards my silent secret speaking
No shadow cast in ancient room
Bare footsteps whisper in the gloom
As stealthy as a dropping pin
A void to fill, a pain to kill, to kill....
Yes, kill again
Savage hunger vile and base
Darkened frame reflects no face
I stand naked at the door
Hand to handle, I free the beast
A tug, a click, such smooth release....
Before me then in blinding light
Sweet object of midnight’s delight
Cheese and meat, pickled beets, milk, yogurt
Oh man, a feast!
I did not come this far to linger
To waste saliva upon my fingers, Oh no!
So set about to eat with haste
By the light of the fridge I chew and pace
Till ever savory morsel’s taste had passed my salty lips
Only then stand back to breathe
And though by now my hunger gone
Still I perceive that siren song
Beckoning, by my reckoning
From the gaping maw of the ancient fridge
As if teasing me
“Please come see if when you close my door
The light really does go out”
As if there could be any doubt. And yet...
Perhaps I should just check and see
Surely no harm could come to me
And I will just be that much closer
To the meat and cheese
Nimbly then I slip inside
Shoving frigid pot roast aside
Turn ‘round to see the door come swinging
Remember then this old appliance
Predates safety code compliance
Hear the click, feel my breath catch
Oh, dear God! The latch has latched!
“Okay”, says I, “You’ve had your fun
The light indeed has ceased to glow
So, being then that this we know
Release the latch and let me go”
Came cold reply to this: just....
“No”
And the fridge begins to hum
Midnight snacks would be my death
I once was told by someone
But never by the life of me
Did I think that I’d become one
