THANKS:
My thanks to Jerry for everything, which includes loving me through bouts of self-loathing that almost make me unable to do this, and for too many other things to list (but I love you and thank you); to Lex for being a pal and my first call, always; to Kris for playing ebow and all sorts of other shit because it makes me happy; to Justin for tracking so beautifully; to Joanna and Skyler for holding it down; to Kurt for being the one to make it big, and knowing what my voice can do; to Brad for being the last one to handle the work—and for doing it so well. My immense gratitude to Juanita Copeland and Sound Emporium for believing in what I do and always giving me a special, safe place to do it. Eternal thanks to Steve Albini for holding the line when I needed it; it helps me every day, and this record was no exception. In that same vein, thanks to Arthur Klein, Roger Mulford, and Doug Sax. I keep you all with me. Thanks to Julie for bearing witness. As always, I thank my younger selves for staying alive, showing me what I needed to see when it was time to make the work, and helping me forget when that was necessary, too.
I don’t believe in dedicating albums to specific people anymore, because every time I have, they’ve left my life and then I’m stuck with a bad choice and a whole goddamned record to show for the loss. It’s embarrassing. But if I DID believe in it (WHICH I DO NOT), I would dedicate this to Bo, the only one over there who has ever been able to truly see me, and whose strength and talent has always appeared unobstructed, to me.
