Assuredly, I was the man in the moon
When time was young and sprightly
And as now I reflect (I don't mean to project)
I took the position lightly

And back then, when I was the man in the moon
I had no expectations,
No errands to run, no bottles of rum
No liquor, but no obligations

The phases wax, the phases wane
As churns the troubled sea
I sing my friends this sailor tune
As time moves endlessly

I shone on parties, evening gowns,
I shone on foreign shores
I shone on distant, dulcet towns
And now I shine no more

I hung in the sky when time was dry
When nothing sweet was blooming
But in the dripping distance, I saw
Discomforted shapes were looming

The sun and I would playfully fight
Over who was prettier
Day or Night
As I would tenderly tug at the tides
Around the earth we would gently glide
We'd have scholarly talk
Poetry, Plays

And then, I discovered the bottle

Assuredly, I was the man in the moon
When time was overflowing
When small-ship sailors swam and swum
And swiftly stopped their rowing
When they came ashore
But I'm not the man in the moon anymore
