Sans Sol by Christian Carrière

Sans Sol is an audio-visual installation, a collaboration between sound artist/musician Christian Carrière and photographer/video artist Helen Sear. Based in Canada and France respectively, the development of the work has taken the form of a transatlantic “call and response” at a time of ecological crisis and human violation of the planet.

Through his pioneering work with the “polyphonic no-input mixer” and and her international acclaim for producing extraordinary re-presentations of her immediate natural environment, the work seeks to activate the audience in an encounter with non human others that maintains, in Kantian terminology, an unbroken close aesthetic distance.

Through the lens of dystopian science fiction and experimental documentary cinema Carrière and Sear responded to and completed each other’s audio and visual sequences over a period of 18 months.

Sear worked within a micro environment of approximately 20 square metres created by her and her husband in a field /becoming garden in rural France, closely observing insect and amphibian activity.

Working with field recordings, archival audio, ambient soundscapes and semantic mash-ups of film excerpts, Carrière composed and collaged audio counterparts to Helen's observational images.

This album is a collection of Carrière's sound works for this project.
