Paul wrote this tune after the birth of his son, Leo, inspired by Leo’s tendency to start crying just as Paul and his wife Judy were falling back to sleep. The piece charts the inevitable crescendo of that cry from something sweetly containable to a veritable nightmare. ‘Leo’s Cry’ quotes phantasmagorical fragments of klezmer tunes ‘Hava Nagila’ and ‘Chosen Kala Mazel Tov’, and is also testament to Paul’s brief but devoted obsession with Cirque du Soleil.
CHUTNEY is a klezmer band with a twist. Drawing on their Eastern European & Middle Eastern Jewish heritage, they present a hot, spicy and energetic mix of originals and arrangements of traditional dance tunes.
With violin, clarinet, keyboard, bass, percussion and drums, the musicians’ chemistry is electric as they traverse genres from folk to pop, jazz to tango, classical to funk, east to west.
