ION by CIFIKA
With her new full-length album ‘ION’, CIFIKA continues to tell her stories through vivid imagery and otherworldly metaphors, filtering the duality of human emotion through science and fantasy. “‘ION’ portrays the double-sided nature of emotion— how the joy of being with a lover can turn into the fear of losing them, or how sadness can be the force that brings you to a future moment of triumph,” she says.
Immersed in the lore of constellations and the laws of physics, CIFIKA employs astrological imagery to portray the volatility of love throughout ‘ION.’ Scenes from the cosmos, as well as images of molecules and atoms constantly float around in her head while she conceptualizes her songs, she explains. “Things are always moving, disappearing, expanding, exploding.” Her dynamic production mirrors these themes of entropy and agitation, a sweetly sung melody all but conceals the muted yelling of a metal singer on “Giant Lion,” while whispered vocals suddenly erupt into a cacophony of synth and drums on “Hush.” While embracing catchy hooks and dance rhythms, CIFIKA is making electronic music that isn’t too pretentious to acknowledge pop.
As with her past works, the world of ‘ION’ is a world of CIFIKA’s creation, where she is impervious to judgment and free of limitations. But although ‘ION’ depicts aspirations of boundless resilience, its realizations remain firmly rooted in reality.
