MOVEMENT 2
In movement two, “Water into Light” the ghost hears a captivating birdcall (played by Leanne Friedman’s Flute) from a distance. It hovers just below the waves feeling the warmth of the light for the first time. In a moment of inspiration it grows wings in mimicry of the bird and emerges to the surface. In a delirious rush it’s senses fill with color, temperature sensation and emotion all at once. In a complete change of perspective the ghost sees and feels all it has been missing for so long. The ghost becomes overwhelmed as it spirals towards self destruction. As it grasps for understanding it’s new existence, it withers in a cataclysmic rage.

LAMINARIA A Folk Horror Chamber Music Suite about the cycle of birth, death and the spaces between, told through the narrative of an underwater sea ghost. It explores topics such as Myth, Folklore, Memory, and Shadow.
It is a celebration of power of kelp, a plant that is used as food as well as medicinally to induce labor for either birth or abortion. LAMINARIA considers our individual place within the overwhelming force of nature, through the mythology of an underwater shadow figure as a metaphor for trauma. Written for 10 piece chamber orchestra as well as hand made acoustic instruments for foley sound effects.
The creation of LAMINARIA music composition and studio recording has been funded by New Music USA, the Alice Ditson Fund, the Gilman Foundation,The Amphion Foundation,The Cheswatyr Foundation, The Wendy Osserman Dance Company, NYFA, ASCAP and BMI.
