Amid the great potato hills of Washington state, beneath the endless late spring sun, locked in my rumpus room, I revive the old folk form, the hootenanny, with contemporary electronic musical instruments. In the forgotten past, a hootenanny was a gathering of musicians playing together for their own amusement. Today, a hootenanny is a gathering of drum machines, synthesizers, and special effects playing in concert to create a ruckus. This ruckus, I surmise, must resemble the hootenannies of old, if not in sound then in spirit. I have peered into the heart of the hootenanny and brought back a vision, a vision I embedded into each of the six tracks presented here. Visions and dreams, driving me nearly mad. I ran into the meadow and the insects went silent. A bird laughed. The insects began. -David B. Applegate
