Aux Folies by Great Pagans

An anthology written over several years, "Aux Folies" is a stylistically varied album of songs picked for their shared lyrical themes. Taking influence from artists such as David Bowie or Talking Heads who boldly played with the limits of genre across one record, the album displays 80s jangling indie and jazz-flecked psychedelia often nestled next to lofi dream pop with even nods to classic house.

Sometimes tongue-in-cheek, often introspective, the lyrics deal with anxiety, love, and isolation sung with songwriter Alex Painter’s distinct understated style and a sense of melody unique to the band.

Taken as a whole the album acts as a document of a period in time, offering glimpses of frank honesty in the often dreamlike musical world the songs inhabit.

Aux Folies was recorded in line with the DIY ethic that Great Pagans and the Anti-Ghost Moon Ray collective have always adhered to; avoiding traditional studio setups and with Alex playing many of the instruments himself. The album will be released digitally and on vinyl on Sept 3rd 2021.

Great Pagans is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Alex Painter. A part of the highly creative Anti-Ghost Moon Ray collective/label based in Brighton and regularly collaborates and tours with a number of artists including William Doyle, Tony Njoku and Dog In The Snow.
