When I was younger I could not wait to grow up
and hit the big city

The lights and the bands & the bars and the bums:
my new life felt gritty

The people I’d meet, the books that I’d read,
the late night “All Happy”

I found philosophy, I found a new me
as I criss crossed the country

You can’t be faulted
for feeling the tug in your heart
follow the pull and it takes you right back to the start

Now that I’m older
I pretend to know better & recall my memories
Like ink on a paper distorted by water
with images shifting

We piece together the things that we were
they shape this moment
now look at yourself and know that tomorrow
is built from your choices

I know today I’m different
from anyone I’ve been before
but every new day stands on
what came before
