The Mississippi Delta might be one of the most humid places on earth. The weather here feels intense with both hot and cold sticking to you more than the places I’ve visited. Winter feels colder, and summer is relentless. And like the thick heat of summer, rust sticks to the water towers and old beat up gins and train tracks. All of this rust creates a friction, like humid heat against the skin. The stickiness of rust is reflected in the harmonic progression of the song. Bob heard the piano player Leon Blue play a 12-bar blues where he substituted the III chord where the V chord happens in bar nine, and Bob decided to use that in this song. The substitution creates a rust-like friction, but is quite beautiful as rust can be. In this song my man “sticks to me just like rust.”
