electric shadows by Ed Perkins

This album features a live performance of my live shadow puppet system Wyang Listrik (meaning Electric Shadows in Balinese), inspired by Indonesian shadow puppet theatre and realised in MaxMsp and Jitter. The piece is an interaction between a male and female avatar, controlled in real time by two performers.

The figures are animated in real time and each posture and associated gesture is accompanied by non verbal phrases to represent simple interactions between individuals.

This recording was made in front of an audience at the Deep Space at Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria, 2010.

I use technology to create immersive pieces and installations. I have performed and exhibited across the UK and Europe at venues including Ars Electronica, SARC, Snape Maltings, ICA and the Tate Modern. My work has been broadcasted on BBC Radio 3 & 4, Resonance FM and The Discovery Channel. I am also one of Sound and Music's Embedded composers, in residence with RPS Award winning Apartment House
