Inuktitut by Elisapie

Inuktitut is Elisapie's fourth solo effort. It's a covers album that sprouted in the artist's mind in the winter of 2021, when songs by artists such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, Metallica, Queen, and Cyndi Lauper, whose music once took over the community radio airwaves throughout Nunavik, Northern Quebec, triggered a flood of tears. Many of these songs were an escape as the community and cultural references were being challenged by colonization. Elisapie began a mental archaeological process: finding songs associated with emotional memories and people from her past. She followed that with a second, more prosaic quest. She sought the permission of the original artists to translate and adapt the songs that are now on this album.

Elisapie reinvigorates the poetry of these 10 songs thanks to the raw sounds of the thousand-year-old Inuit language and gives each track a unique and deeply personal quality. The tracks range from rock & roll and pop classics from the 1960’s to the 90’s. Every song is linked to a loved one or an intimate story that has shaped the person Elisapie is today. Through this act of cultural reappropriation, she tells her story, offers these songs as a gift to her community, and makes her language and culture resonate beyond the Inuit territory.

Inuktitut est le quatrième effort solo d’Elisapie. Il s’agit d’un album de reprises dont l’idée a germée dans la tête de l’artiste à l’hiver 2021, alors que des chansons – de Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, Metallica, Queen, Cyndi Lauper et plusieurs autres artistes qui ont un jour résonné aux confins du Grand Nord québécois – ont déclenché une crise de larmes. Elisapie réalise alors que ces mélodies ont été un refuge pour elle, mais aussi pour son entourage, ses tantes, ses oncles, ses cousins, ses parents, sa communauté. Un grand nombre de ces chansons étaient alors une échappatoire dans un contexte où les repères culturels et communautaires s’effaçaient face à la colonisation. C’est ainsi que débute un important travail archéologique mental: celui de se remémorer ces chansons associées à des êtres du passé et à des moments chargés d’émotions. S’ensuit une seconde quête davantage prosaïque, celle d’obtenir l'autorisation des artistes originaux, afin de traduire et d’adapter les chansons qui se retrouvent aujourd’hui sur l’album.

Avec ces 10 reprises de classiques du rock et de la pop des années 60 à 90, qu’elle a traduites et interprétées en Inuktitut, Elisapie réinvente la poésie de ces chansons grâce à la sonorité brute de cette langue millénaire, leur octroyant un caractère unique et profondément personnel. Véritable liste de lecture d’une autobiographie émotive, chaque titre est adressé à un proche ou lié à un récit intime qui a façonné la personne qu’elle est aujourd’hui. Par cet acte de réappropriation culturelle, l’autrice-compositrice-interprète inuk raconte son histoire, offre ces chansons en cadeau à sa communauté, et fait résonner sa langue et sa culture au-delà du territoire des Inuit.
