The Black contrives its own emblems, like those ancient hiero-
glyphs that decorated pyramid walls, except that these signs tell no intricate stories of origins or gods. If anything, they are ciphers (from the Arabic root sifr meaning « zero») they sing the elegy of a hypothetical cosmos, which never truly was nor ever came to pass, a barely-manifested terrain of lines that nevertheless contain the exception to every archetypal rule.
Thus, the machine must create ambiences at the radical edge
of their own disintegration; it must have a gift for following
clues of the irreversible, the fallen, and the overthrown.
