Lydian Child by Emily Francis Trio

The inspiration behind “Lydian Child” was the somewhat ‘supernatural’ power of synesthesia. People who experience this can essentially ‘feel’ sounds. This presents itself in a variety of ways, but the most common is seeing colours that represent different pitches, chords, tonal centres, etc. There are many musicians and non-musicians alike who possess these abilities, another example being perfect pitch (the ability to identify or recreate any note without the benefit of a reference tone). Lydian Child is a nod to these musical ‘powers’, playfully setting the tune within a cinematic, superhero-style composition. The extensive use of the Lydian mode gives the song its air of mystique, but also its positivity and sense of reaching triumphantly into the beyond.

Fast becoming one of the hottest young groups on the British Jazz scene, the Emily Francis Trio are a London based group who combine influences from Jazz-Funk, Soul and Progressive Rock with a traditional improvised sensibility, resulting in fresh and exciting compositions.
