Generations by Various Artists

Inspired by Mike K Smith's book, 'The Lazy Producer', fellow members of the Emotion Wave Discord community began to explore and discover their own unique approaches to creating generative music, sending the artists down some unexpected rabbit holes of discovery.

In Mike's own words...

'"Why would you leave all the musical decisions to chance?" When we play music, it's typical for there to be a beginning, middle and end. And choices we make are largely down to our experience, taste, what music we like and what influences us. But instead, what if we set up some rules and guard-rails, but then let a roll of the dice decide what happens next? We might be surprised. By chance something might happen that's really beautiful that we'd never have written from scratch. The music could go on indefinitely - the random processes giving us an endless stream of novel music. Rather than getting stuck in 8 or 16 bar loops forever, we would have a constant stream of new ideas. That is what generative music can achieve for us…'
