The album 'untitled (2019)' by Francisco López was entirely created in 2019 and composed of a variety of very different pieces. Even though the pieces have very different origins, they all come together in a fascinating sonic trip, with the supreme quality and attention to detail you've come to expect of Francisco López. He himself humbly refers to this album as 'a killer'. Couldn't agree more.

Francisco López is internationally recognized as one of the major figures of the sound art and experimental music scene. For almost forty years he has developed an astonishing sonic universe, absolutely personal and iconoclastic, based on a profound listening of the world. Destroying boundaries between industrial sounds and wilderness sound environments, shifting with passion from the limits of perception to the most dreadful abyss of sonic power, proposing a blind, profound and transcendental listening, freed from the imperatives of knowledge and open to sensory and spiritual expansion.

He has realized hundreds of concerts, projects with environmental recordings, workshops and sound installations in over seventy countries of the six continents. His extensive catalog of sound pieces (with live and studio collaborations with hundreds of international artists) has been released by nearly 400 record labels / publishers worldwide. He has been awarded four times with honorary mentions at the competition of Ars Electronica Festival and is the recipient of the Qwartz Award 2010 for best sound anthology.

"No title. Francisco López has amassed a body of published works without the need for an accompanying title totalling now more than #378 with this release, itself – again – untitled, and counting, we presume. The grandmaster of massive, engrossing works of delicate yet wholly inescapable crescendos between almost not-there fragility in near-silence and thundering sound masses of tumbling boulder-like scale here presents a variety of pieces, all created in the year 2019, all composed of different source materials, pieces, origins. And although these pieces, all eight of them, are of isolated, idiosyncratic, individual nature, each one a world of dense detail and tactile textures to behold, the album form and format, the juxtaposing and setlist-ish build-up of the collection (strangely this record has a live feel to it), invokes a Franz Kline-like broad stroke power move, intended to underscore the maturest of masterful practices in aural art – the Olympian heights López has reached. Over almost forty years now López has crafted his universe of and in sound with elegant touches and brutal resolve. His is a world as much of telegraph bleeps as it is one of the wind-strewn deserted snow plains or deep dark silver grotto-ambiences. A López experience, however, above all, is one of perception and listening pushed to its limits – offering transcendent immersion and blissful expansion of the senses (plus, maybe, if you are so inclined, the soul too). Untitled (2019) marks a true highlight in the maestros wide and deep catalogue: (a) magnum opus recreation (no remix!) of sound matter – the basics of his craft and trade – refined, purified to the very essence: "like getting hit in the face with a baseball bat. Or better, like getting hit in the back of the neck. You never see it coming; it just knocks you down” (to quote American artist Bruce Nauman commenting on his intention with his works)."

"All the compositions in this new album by Francisco López for esc.rec. date to 2019 and were recorded in Den Haag, Milan, Riga, Prague, Mmabolela and Loosduinen. They are brought together here to resonate in a coherent and cohesive collection. Here we find the meticulous attention to detail the composer is known for. Sounds are always controlled, elegant and refined, whispered accomplices of a dream narrative. There are several natural field recordings, but it’s unclear to what extent these have been processed or manipulated. Many are strange, insect like buzzing, darker aftermaths, an airplane, perhaps streams, storms and rains, all set in an elaborate sound design, with repetitive pulses and low hums, balanced by elements that are sometimes brighter and sharp, sometimes silent. It is difficult to talk about the works of Francisco López without getting involved in unnecessary lyricisms in support of what we have heard. Perhaps this is the reason why the experimenter does not like to offer further explanation, notes or visual attachments (the latter, however, are present in this issue in the form of two photographs for the front and back cover, probably captured in the locations of some of the field recordings). Perhaps for the same reason in some of his live performances, participants are asked to blindfold their eyes with strips of fabric. Everything is only in our imagination, far from additional suggestion, personal perceptions are sharpened, mental glimpses of a world only sketched by the author, which needs the additional availability and sensitivity of the listener to complete itself. “Untitled # 371” comes from original environmental sound material recorded in Borneo in 2012. “Untitled # 372” is the soundtrack of the film “Aerobiome” by Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand, presented at the Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. “Untitled # 373” is the result of original environmental sound material recorded in the Mmabolela Reserve (South Africa). “Untitled # 378” is developed from the evolution (without any “remix”) of raw materials provided by the Disrotted Chicagoans. The album is very beautiful, absolutely fluid and engaging."

"De in Madrid geboren geluidskunstenaar Francisco López wordt internationaal erkend als een van de belangrijke actoren in de geluidskunst- en experimentele muziekscene. Al bijna veertig jaar maakt de man zijn muziek annex geluidskunst, waarbij hij volledig autonoom te werk gaat en zijn eigen geluidsuniversum creëert. Genregrenzen, muzikale hokjes en discussies over wat geluidskunst is en wat muziek, zijn in het geheel niet van belang als het om het werk van López gaat. Het is er, het is origineel en het is inventief.

Hoe de Spanjaard het doet, is een raadsel, maar zijn werk heeft duidelijk zijn eigen stempel, terwijl zijn stukken toch veel verschillende richtingen op kunnen gaan. Onlangs bracht López een verzameling uit (A Bunch Of Stuff (1980-2020), waarop fragmenten van 138 stukken zijn te horen die in de loop van de jaren zijn verschenen. De vele uitgaven zijn uitgebracht door een paar honderd platenlabels. Zo is nu Untitled (2019) verschenen bij het in Deventer gevestigde Esc.rec. en op die uitgave zijn een achttal werken zonder titel (maar met cijfer), stammend uit 2019, verzameld waaruit in ieder geval een deel van de veelzijdigheid van de kunstenaar blijkt.

López’ werk is elektro-akoestisch, waarbij hij gebruik maakt van veldopnamen. Die veldopnamen zijn als zodanig te herkennen of liggen ingebed in de klankwereld die de geluidsartiest creëert. Elektronische klanken kunnen een motief vormen, als drone fungeren, maar ook een ritme maken, zoals gebeurt in #375, waarmee met ruis ritmische patronen worden geweven, die al repeterend van vorm of van dynamiek veranderen. Naast variatie in vorm en volume, zorgt López voor verandering van klankkleuren, wordt in dichtheid gevarieerd, is er ruimte voor incidentele klanken en worden spanningsbogen gecreëerd. Elk geluid, hoe klein of zacht ook, heeft een functie en draagt bij aan de eigenzinnige geluidskunst.

In elk stuk dwingt López je om aandachtig te luisteren. Dat kan komen door de veelheid van klanken, door veranderingen in muzikaal perspectief, door klanken die je ergens mee kunt associëren en je doen afvragen wat je nu precies hoort en of je het goed hoort, of doordat een stuk zo zacht klinkt, dat het bijna lijkt dat er alleen stilte heerst. Dat is het geval in #379, dat je de oren doet spitsen om goed te kunnen beoordelen of er geluiden waar te nemen zijn. Met een goede koptelefoon en op hoog volume blijkt dat wel zo te zijn en de geluiden dragen ook een flinke lading spanning in zich. Een hoge drone en lage, zware en donkere tonen zijn daarvoor verantwoordelijk, al klinken ze zelfs zacht met de volumeknop volledig opengedraaid.

Aan de andere kant van López’ muzikale terrein bevindt zich het slotstuk. #378 laat de noisy kant van de kunstenaar horen en daarin gaat hij behoorlijk ver, tenminste in vergelijking met de andere stukken op Untitled (2019). #372 klinkt dan weer minimaler, met enkele trage percussieve bewegingen, maar bijna onopvallend bestaat het stuk uit subtiele lagen en gebeurt er constant iets achter het hoofdmotief. Tegen het einde komen de achterliggende klanken dreigend naar voren. Natuurgeluiden zijn te herkennen in #373. López bouwt daar zijn abstracte werk omheen, gebruikmakend van voorwerpen. Plots zijn de natuurgeluiden en de klanken van de objecten verdwenen, om plaats te maken voor elektronische klanken, inclusief harde ruis. Daar voegt hij dan weer het geluid van onweer en een overvliegende helikopter aan toe, waarna de natuurgeluiden weer terugkeren. Het tekent de drastische manier van werken van de artiest. Bij beluistering is niets zeker en zelfs na ettelijke luisterbeurten bevat de geluidskunst nog verrassingen.

Hoewel de stukken op het album heel verschillend zijn, passen ze goed bij elkaar en maakt de plaat als geheel een coherente indruk. De overeenkomst tussen alle stukken is dat het om (muzikaal) avontuur gaat. Dat avontuur zit niet alleen in de geschapen klankwereld zelf, maar ook in de interpretatie ervan en dat is aan de luisteraar. Wat López creëert is op zichzelf staand en is radicaal, waarbij de Madrileen wel alles onder controle houdt, ook als hij af en toe noisy uitpakt. Kil is zijn werk allerminst; de klanken hebben een bepaalde gevoelswaarde en de geluidskunst wekt een sensatie door zijn ongrijpbaarheid. Het is ronduit intrigerend."

"Francisco López geldt als één van de boeiendste kunstenaars in het veld van geluidskunst en veldopnames. Dat 'Untitled (2019) met daarop de composities 'Untitled 371 t/m 379' uitkwam bij het in Deventer gevestigde Esc.rec. kan dan ook best bijzonder worden genoemd. Een prachtig en zeer divers album.

Francisco López begon zijn carrière als musicus in de wereld van elektroncia, geluidskunst en veldopnames half jaren ’80 van de vorige eeuw. Inmiddels is hij uitgegroeid tot één van de meest belangrijke actoren in dit genre, getuigen ook zijn enorme catalogus aan samenwerkingen, projecten en albums. Opvallend daarbij is dat López niet over een vaste platenmaatschappij beschikt waar hij zijn albums uitbrengt. De zes albums bijvoorbeeld die vorig jaar en dit jaar verschenen, kwamen uit bij zes verschillende labels. Eén van die uitgaves, ‘Untitled (2019)’, verscheen bij Esc.rec.

De term ‘Untitled’ duikt vaak op in het werk van Lopez. In plaats van namen te geven aan zijn stukken duidt hij ze vaak aan met dit woord, gevolgd door een nummer. Zo bevat dit album de nummers 371 tot en met 379. Er is wat voor te zeggen, López vertelt immers geen verhalen middels zijn muziek, dus waarom zou je er dan een naam aan geven? Klanken dat is waar het om gaat. En die haalt hij overal vandaan. Soms gaat het om veldopnames die hij zelf heeft gemaakt, soms om elektronische geluiden, soms ook om delen uit reeds bestaande stukken die hij in een andere context plaatst.

Tegendraads als López is, begint dit album met nr. ‘375’. Een hoge, vrij zacht klinkende sinusgolf, gevolgd door aanzwellende golven industrieel aandoende ruis, die López verderop lardeert met morse signalen. Ook in ‘377’ staat het industriële proces centraal. Het heeft verdacht veel weg van het geluid dat behoort bij een hogedrukreiniger. Van nr. 371 weten we dat López het materiaal opnam in 2012 op Borneo. Mooi is wel dat ook hier, net als in alle andere stukken op dit album, het repetitieve element centraal staat.

En dan komen we direct op een kenmerkend aspect van de muziek op dit album, of feitelijk in het werk van deze componist en musicus. López gebruikt steeds weer slechts één dominant patroon, vaak opvallend sterk verdicht qua klank, dat hij tot in alle finesses uitwerkt. Ieder stuk kent daarbij nauwelijks een begin en al helemaal geen eind. Midden in de turbulentie breekt López de stukken telkens af. Inmiddels zijn we bij nr. 374 aanbeland, een stevige storm op zee, althans dat is de associatie die ik erbij heb.

Nr. 372 lijkt aanvankelijk een wat vreemde eend in de bijt, het begint met een geluid wat veel wegheeft van koorzang, maar schijn bedriegt. ook in dit stuk, oorspronkelijk geschreven voor de film ‘Aerobiome’ van Evelina Domnitch en Dmitry Gelfand, staat verder een zelfde type geluid centraal. Nr. 373 bevat eveneens veldgeluiden, afkomstig van het Mmabolela Park in Zuid Afrika. Naast krekels horen we hier het knetteren van hout dat je op een vuur gooit, tot het onweer losbarst en het knetteren vanzelf stopt. Het contrast met het zeer zachte nr. 376 is groot. We horen de wind en zachte ondefinieerbare klanken – een vogelbroedgebied? Het heeft er veel van weg. In het laatste stuk, nr. 378 zet López de zaak weer flink op scherp. Qua sfeer benadert dit de wereld van doom metal. Een album van uitersten afsluitend."

"With his vast catalogue created in over 40 years, Francisco López has become ‘one of the major figures of the sound art and experimental music scene – destroying boundaries between industrial sounds and wilderness sound environments, shifting with passion from the limits of perception to the most dreadful abyss of sonic power.’

All of this (and more) can be experienced on Untitled (2019), released by the Esc.rec. label. All of these (8) pieces were created in 2019, but their impact is very very different from each other. In what seems to have become a tradition, they are all named Untitled, followed by a number. In this collection we find Untitled #375, 377, 371, 379, 372, 373, 376 and 378 (so what happened to #374?). Without titles to guide your imagination, it is entirely up to the listener to interpret the sounds. And, as said, that is quite an adventure, since López doesn’t shy away from challenging the listener with some aural extremes.

#375, the opener, sounds like a washing machine running amok and sending out morse code (I really wonder what message the morse codes transmits, but that I must leave up to others to decode). Right after those first 13 minutes, #377 gets a lot quieter and more quiet – at least for a short while, because it slowly builds up into a piercing ‘abyss of sonic power’. Next up is a collection of environmental sound, filtered in a way you will never hear in real-time. The most extreme track in the opposite of the spectrum is #379, because after the three tracks preceding it, this seems like there is no sound at all. There ís, of course, but you need a headphone or to turn your amp up to hear anything. Which may be a bit of risk when playing the following tracks, even though they are not as invasive as the first three: these are the more comfortable listenings of the set. Until the closing track, that is, which is a heavy banger that is created ‘from evolution (no “remix”) of source raw materials provided by Disrotted’. Play this one loud to end all parties and get rid of unwanted visitors 😉

In short, for the most part this is not exactly an easy listen, but it’s definitely the kind of adventurous dive into unknown sound territories we’ve come to expect from Francisco López."
