Originally was a spin-off from the Fallen Leaves era. Centered and branched around the most classic breakbeats from before our time, It was the Third official evolution of the Primary 'SG' krew which was Estranj, Jolten, and Gutterfux at first... Later on expanding, Lx13, FishTank(estranj's cousin), & the legendary/ late brother, SKULLY.
This time was all about freestyling off the top of the head, how we originally started honing our craft to create more styles out of thin air. We would spend hours days and weeks locked up in my garage and just shift breaks and sounds and snippets along with every and anything else we could find. It was always so exciting hearing what would come out of us or what we could spontaneously come up with on the quick. Mostly using sounds and dialog from old 50's films.
It started off with some makeshift ass turntables and shitload of raw freestyle recordings and sessions we had built up shortly after high school. My family would always throw parties and my sister had a shitload of friends over all the time so we would just DJ for each other and pass the mic, that was the true meaning of our 'Squid' Mechanism. Our unique ability to diversify our Versatility and branch upon each others concepts as well as shapeshift to the beats, the scratches, the drum stops, everything. Multi tasking amongst each other and learning our selves. Becoming a unit in unicen. We would bust sun up to sun down and then again. It was always dope when everyone was over and we would just get down and funky for them.
#9 the Bonus track was a perfect example of that. We would start as 2 and then more people would come in the garage as the day went on and would have to style with us or go crazy and dip out haha. This was in short, the ultimate escape for us. A dimension to hone our mind states and exclude the outside world just doing what we loved. Hip Hop.
We never stopped growing. Sound was everything. Sight Seeing
These songs were recorded bouncing back and forth in a month span between me and Jolten. We took this album more serious than anything and these were the first CD's we finally took into physical copys for sale, which we would post up in Downtown with our sound systems trying to slang copys for bus fare, beer, and weed money. I even quit my Office job at the time for this album i remember. That shit meant nothing to me.
This was the lifeline. Squid also signifies The 8-principals of Writing i developed which all stemmed to our collective understanding of our kind of formulas of construction, and character even. Our philosophy and code. The many directions of the mind, simplified in options. The time machine pilots in a CD sliver travelling in a backpack. All our CD's of this album were all unique in their own ways, all hand made and drawn by us in my garage while bumping Life at Sea. Our language over beats were becoming perfected, and our Science was sharpened more than ever. Precisely.
I'd even go as far as to say this was a point in time where we were unconsciously becoming a school of training/ influence of some sort as well, for a couple MC's we brought up at the time in that garage. The Sweat Lab. MC's who would later go on to releasing their own branches within the Squad, (a later complete ESP krew)
I consider this our first real legitimate Serious "SG" release.
