The Ruin by Eternal Firmament

This song was inspired by the medieval english elegy The Ruin which I first heard at the Fall of Civilisations podcast. I then tried to imagined how the observer of The Ruin would have reacted upon witnessing the state of our planet today and wrote the lyrics based on that. I knew immediately that the music would have to be black metal with some ambient dungeon synth parts.

Once I finished the music and the lyrics, I was lucky to find out my longtime friend Matt would was up for doing vocals, playing the bass and drawing the artwork. Subsequently this album felt more of a joined effort than our previous respective solo albums and therefore we decided to create the Eternal Firmament.

It has been a pleasure to work with my friend Leo continuosly over the last few years on eachother's music, as well as attending shows!
We've seen the likes of Steve Hackett, Dream Theater and Paul Gilbert together! We are into our prog rock/metal adjacent stuff!

The artwork I drew for this song was inspired by the Royal Garrison Church in Portsmouth, UK which was bombed in WWII. Leo liked the structure of the remains and felt it fitted perfectly with The Ruin elegy themed lyrics.
I also added some Opeth, Black Sabbath, Necromantia and Candlemass influence into the artwork.

I was excited when Leo asked me to do some Black Metal vocals, since I have never really attempted this style in any of my bands or solo work.
It was also different for me on the bass guitar end, as I've never played this style of heavy music before, and I listened to bands like the Greek Black Metallers Necromantia to give me inspiration in terms of technical bass playing!
