Trapped on an ice floe as darkness approaches, the snow begins to fall.
Fear Knot, originally titled 13 North, is a track from the unreleased "Intuition's Dilemma" a collection of pieces I composed between 1990 and 1993.
By 1989, I'd been working from behind the drums for 17 years and had heard millions of notes made by others - I thought it was time I attempt to put a few together myself. Over the next few years I built a personal electronic music studio comprised solely of synths, sound modules and a primitive sampler - the Akai S900, recording via MIDI into a PC running Voyetra+ Sequencer Gold. I had no live instrument recording capability and used keyboards, a DrumKat and trigger pads to physically play parts into the computer. I would then go about "painting the battleship with a Q-tip" editing for countless hours to achieve the desired result.
Between the years 1990 and 1997 I wrote many hours of music including a number of commissioned works for choreographers in the world of modern dance. This period came to an end when soon after my daughter was born in '98 the studio was packed up for a move and was never set up again, leaving the pieces I had spent so much time creating unreleased. My musical energies became entirely devoted to teaching, transcribing and writing, what has eventually become, thousands of pages of drum instruction and conceptual materials. In 2023 I came out of self-imposed hibernation and began creating my gong & percussion pieces, strictly using acoustic instruments.
There remain many hours of music, from the early 90's, in various states of incompletion that unfortunately will never see the light of day, but there does exist a body of complete works that I will finally begin to release starting with this piece.
