Time Between by Katsura Yamauchi / Jason Kahn

Sax player Katsura Yamauchi (born in 1954) is based in Oita, Japan. He began performing in earnest in the early 2000s, and since then has toured in Japan, Europe, North America, Southeast Asia and Taiwan and continued to expand his distinctive musical activities. Jason Kahn (percussion, voice, electronics, guitar) was born in New York in 1960 and lives in Zurich. He has performed throughout the world and been a prominent figure on the improvised/experimental music scene for many years.

Kahn visited Japan in autumn 2023, and he and Yamauchi gave duo performances in Oita on October 3rd and Fukuoka (Hakata) on October 4th. Time Between contains two pieces from each of those performances (four in total). Yamauchi played sax, and Kahn used electronics. The performances progress in a minimalistic way overall, with occasional bursts of fierce intensity. The two musicians’ special characteristics and remarkable creative affinity are evident in these excellent performances.

山内桂は1954年生まれ、大分在住のサックス奏者。2000年代前半から本格的に音楽活動を始める。今日に至るまで、日本国内はもとより欧米や東南アジアの国々、台湾をツアーし、彼ならではの独特な活動を展開している。Jason Kahn は1960年米国ニューヨーク出身、スイス、チューリヒ在住のパーカッション / ヴォイス / エレクトロニクス / ギター奏者。長年にわたり世界各国で演奏し、即興 / 実験音楽シーンで名を馳せる音楽家。

Jason Kahn は2023年秋に来日。Kahn と山内桂は10月3日に大分で、翌日の4日には福岡 (博多) でデュオ演奏をおこなった。本CDには、その両日の演奏それぞれ2曲 (全4曲) を収録。山内桂はサックス、Jason Kahn はエレクトロニクスを使用。演奏は、時折激しさを見せるも全体としてミニマリスティックに進行する。互いの持ち味が活き、ふたりの親和性の高さが感じられる好演。
