Destiny Road from Destiny Road by The Gary Dranow Band

I had a very vivid dream in 1996. I could see myself in a dream state in Emerald colored hills far away. Also in the dream I met a world traveler and we fell in love. I woke up the next morning and immediately wrote Destiny Road. In 1998, on a whim, I put my house in Manhattan Beach, California up for sale, it sold in one day. I then flew up to Park City, where I have been going in winter for skiing as far back as 1970. But I had never been there in the summer months.

A realtor, who was a good friend of mine from when I ski race coached at Snow Summit, California, picked me up from the Airport and took me to see about 20 homes for sale in Park City proper and surrounding areas like Jeremy Ranch and Pinebrook Estates.

It seems kind of funny now but I created an Excel spreadsheet to ultimately help me make an informed decision on which house to buy. I fell in love with Pinebrook, mostly for the copious Aspens and Pine Trees and its isolation from the hustle and bustle of Park City proper. It came down to two houses, and, with the help of my nifty spreadsheet I decided on a house in upper Pinebrook on Stagecoach Drive. Dennis, my Realtor friend, got the sellers and I together on Sunday afternoon. We settled on a price. I moved in two months later after both escrows closed.

Then, in 2003, one of my ski racing students, had a very bad crash and I was first on the scene to triage her injuries, a big cut over her eye which was bleeding profusely and an obvious broken nose which I had her reset on her own right there and then. Over a short time we developed feelings for each other.

It was about that time when I had a downhill mountain bike accident in which I fractured my neck and had a concussion from hitting a pinetree just off the trail. Anyway, it resulted in me having four vertebrae fused with a titanium plate and six screws. When I woke up from the surgery, low and behold, my current and forever wife was sitting by my side. She would come every day for the 10 or so days I was in the hospital. We started dating soon thereafter.

We got married on January 3rd 2005. A little about her. She had just gotten her Ph.D. from the University of Utah. It turns out that as a child up until she moved to Utah to attend college (she got a full ride scholarship) she, with her parents, traveled all over the world. She lived in Saudi Arabia from around 7 years old until she would attend Prep-school in the US. She was first in her class and she had many offers for scholarships from colleges such as Georgetown. Luckily for me the U of U offered her the best academic package and she already loved skiing, she decided to attend the U of U, where she is now employed as the only Biostatistician in the entire Cardiology Department. So there was my world traveler and true to my dream she was and is the love of my life. The dream: every bit of it came to be.

Even before you get to his musical career, Gary Dranow has an exciting and impressive resume. A young equestrian turned motocross champion, a clothing line entrepreneur turned mortgage broker, a renowned ski instructor, and an academy founder. Gary Dranow has undoubtedly grabbed life with both hands and squeezed a lot out of it.
