Bonfire Night by Helen Gentile & Lewis Wood
Helen wrote this tune for the Bombarde - Breton oboe - as part of a collaborative podcast project by Andrew Fisher. Inspired by the given words ‘the bonfire’ Helen was tasked with writing a tune that captured the essence of autumnal get-togethers.
Helen and Lewis then went on to record Bonfire Night as a duo, using a heavier production than on their previous recordings, with Whistle, Guitar, Fiddle, Clarinet and of course the Bombarde all in the mix.
The strident Bombarde adds a Breton flavour to this composition, with the strong pulse bringing to mind the hypnotic line dances which feature prominently in traditional Breton dancing. The irregular rhythms are inspired by the unpredictable flickering of flames and the bright major key brings to mind the convivial ambience of sharing heat, light and merriment around the bonfire.
