Dimensions by Ghostwriter

I was on one of my walks when I came across a de-frocked priest living in a converted railway carriage. He believed he had been gravely wronged. Some would say that he looked distinguished, with his sloping brow and steel grey hair, but I detected a faint trace of seediness. My impression was that the dandruff had only just been brushed from his shoulder. He drove a Humber, but he started life in a prefab in Lewisham, you know. He was mercurial and charming, with a cast of mind that made him difficult, even incomprehensible. It was a rackety kind of life, the sort every desk-bound clerk yearned for. His estranged wife was a pragmatist, believing that ideas, theories and concepts rarely matched the dimensions of the inner world. He, on the other hand, pictured his soul as a complex diagram of precise scale measurements. “I never give advice on hypothetical cases”, he said, “I deal exclusively in myth.” With gnomic utterances of that nature he would produce from his briefcase sheets of foolscap covered in obscure pencil jottings. It was the kind of duplicitous claim easily recognised by the alert. We are left not with a mysterious cipher, but a dull minor official with a chip on his shoulder. Of that I am certain.
