The portal grew smaller in the distance. We continued staring out into the perpetual darkness, listening. The gnawing became more persistent. The cries and howls of the victims increased. The combustion was just beginning. But we didn't fault the primitive creatures' actions in any way. The primordial underworld of tunnels, streams and lakes was the perfect space for a rodent infestation.

We tried our best to understand these rodents: the rodents were now a part of our lives; not so the victims.
