I was born in Florida but they gave me away
To Louisiana they sent
Me and my brother, we went
Knowing not a soul but my new ma and dad
I was picking cotton and being rotten
And the Mississippi rolled by

I went to join the army for to straighten me out
Met my first wife
Had a short lived new life and I
Trained to be a killer and I can but I won’t

Something always helped me out
Far as I could see
And got me along
I know I went wrong

I used to be a carpenter, a preacher, a drunk

Talk to my second bride
Raising up an animal’s the nearest I had
To being a father, no I couldn’t bother but I
I got a son in Georgia, one in New Mexico, but up here
In North Dakota I'm just growing older, but I
Ain’t suicidal, no, I’ve got my bible and beer
