1000 Horsepower
The transition from steam to diesel in the mid 1960s was very quick. Drivers throughout the Highlands were sent to school in Edinburgh for a fortnight to learn to handle the new Diesel electric engines. There were three types of engine, the Derby, the Birmingham and the English Electric Class 20, the '1000 Horsepower'.
