Rotating, Rotating by Zhao Cong

Zhao Cong is a Beijing-based experimental/improvisational musician. In addition to performing in live events in Beijing such as Zooming' Night, organized by composer/performer Zhu Wenbo, she has in recent years been expanding her range of activity, visiting Japan each year and performing in various locations around the country. She has also released solo and duo albums on Zhu Wenbo's cassette label, Zoomin' Night.

This CD contains three solo tracks by Zhao Cong. Tracks 1 and 2, each about 20 minutes, were recorded at her home in Beijing in June 2016. Track 3 (about 29 minutes) was recorded in concert at Ftarri, Tokyo, in January 2018. Only the second track is previously released--on Zhao Cong's debut solo album, "Afternoon," a cassette tape that came out on Zoomin' Night in 2016 and has since sold out. On that album the title was "Twice, or More," and on this CD it has changed to "Electric Rotating." Tracks 1 and 3, respectively called "Acousting Rotating" and "Rotating, Rotating," are previously unreleased works.

Zhao Cong arranges a mixer, a cardboard cylinder, household items, and a hemispherical lamp (whose small light has a visual effect) on the same table, manipulates mixer feedback and contact mike, and produces delicate sustained sounds and (as if inserting them into the sustained sounds) numerous and varied noises. While her performance style and sounds are restrained, listeners drifting along in these sounds and the gentle flow of time are left with an indescribable and vivid impression. A masterpiece.

Zhao Cong (チャオ・ソン) は中国、北京在住の実験 / 即興音楽家。北京の作曲家 / 演奏家の Zhu Wenbo (トゥ・ウェンボウ) が企画する Zoomin' Night など北京のライヴ・イヴェントへの出演にとどまらず、ここ数年は毎年のように日本を訪れ、各地でライヴ演奏をおこない活動の場を広げている。また、Zhu Wenbo の Zoomin' Night カセット・レーベルから、ソロやデュオの作品もリリースしている。

本CDには、Zhao Cong のソロ演奏3曲を収録。それぞれ20分前後の1曲目と2曲目は、2016年6月に北京の自宅で録音。3曲目 (約29分) は2018年1月、東京「Ftarri」でのライヴ録音。このうち2曲目だけは過去に発表された作品で、初出は2016年に Zoomin' Night よりカセット・リリースされ、既に売り切れとなっている彼女のデビュー・ソロ・アルバム『Afternoon』。曲名を「Twice, or More」から「Electric Rotating」に変更して再録した。1曲目の「Acoustic Rotating」と3曲目の「Rotating, Rotating」は、これまで未発表の作品である。

Zhao Cong は、ミキサー、ボール紙の筒、日用品類、半円球の照明 (小さな光が視覚的効果を持つ) をひとつのテーブルに並べ、ミキサー・フィードバックやコンタクト・マイクを操作して、繊細な持続音や、(そこにさしはさむように) こまごまとしたいくつものノイズを放つ。演奏も繰り出す音も控えめながら、それらの音とともに緩やかな時間の流れを漂った聴き手に、言うに言われぬ強烈な印象を残す名作。
