Lyrics
We knelt to clean the wound of sand and prepared to apply a bandage, but still smiling we cursed the drunks responsible for all the broken glass scattered across this shoreline. We were sitting so close together, I felt the vibration against your thigh just moments before you did. And on the phone they said, "Your cousin's dead. He's hung himself in the closet." And: "Please don't let this upset you. We just thought you should know. Try and have an okay night in spite of it." And oh, I wish I could talk to you. And oh, I wish I could make those delicate white lines like filigree across your wrists suck right back into your canvas skin and put a light in your eyes again. And from the back of the car you said to me, "It's just another sun setting." And I turned and I stated that it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. And no pills nor pain could conceivably replace the day that was now descending, resplendent. And oh, I wish I could lie to you. And oh, I wish I could sit with you in that night anew and feel the blood pulsing through the brush of your narrow, trembling fingertips.
