Phoenix by Ian Boddy

Phoenix is the third of my trilogy of vinyl albums released in the mid-1980s. It was also the first album that I self released on my Something Else Records imprint. It was recorded at Reel Time Studios in Newcastle in early 1986 and was in many ways my most ambitious album release at that time. Musically it’s certainly a diverse collection of tracks ranging from full on synth epics, such as the title track, to whimsical interludes like Gavotte and guest appearances by other musicians, with wordless female vocals, drums & saxophone. The final piece, The Necromancer, hearkens back, perhaps, to the title track of Spirits with its complex arrangement and synth orchestrations.

It was also a busy year for me concert wise with a prestigious gig at The Purcell Rooms, which is part of the South Bank complex in London as well as headline spot at UK Electronica. The album was originally reissued in 1996 on CD, again on Something Else Records, with bonus material from the first of these concerts with The Purcell Set (Parts 1 - 4). This track is included in this remastered edition too as well as an extra, unreleased section from that same gig in a spirited performance of The Necromancer.
