UPCOMING EVENTS
Thomas and I met in the mid 90's after an IOS gig there and quickly became friends and collaborators to this day. At the time he was full on into his Kurzweil live sampling rig and Lexicon feedback system that provides the otherworld mindfuck to these proceedings. We did a number of shows and they resulted in our first release Hz on Sonoris in 1999 and this one Upcoming Events on No Fun in 2008. The cover image taken in Toronto by Chris Block (POX, CHEER-ACCIDENT) is more timely than ever and is reason enough for this work to surface again, just in time for the new american festivities to begin. Hang on, we may be in for a wild ride, and the music is pretty out there too...

On tracks 16 & 17 here I have made the audio available like the CD as it should be heard with no pops between all the continous flowing tracks...

Given the subtext of creeping fascism and the slow stomp of totalitarian boots, it is no surprise that the soundtrack for such upheaval, Upcoming Events, is an angry mix of Industrial pounding, locomotive propulsion, and general sci-fi soundtrack eeriness. There is even a fairly long and maddening tape of an encounter with a police officer who only wants to hear obedience, not reason.
In its rage and sublte sadness over the political, noise masters Dan Burke and Thomas DiMuzio collaborate once again to create a seamless set of fifteen tracks, mostly cobbled from live shows, that express more ideas and variations of tone and colors than most noise recordings. It is like they are combing through sounds for evidence of the rage building because of recent history; their collage of brutal tones a form of resistance. So many people, at least among those I know, are so mad and scared and unsure that often they can?t express what they feel as the political intrudes so deep into their personal lives. Instrumental music, of the sort here on Upcoming Events seems the proper response. To listen to tracks like Deregulation, In God We Trust, and Freedom Fries, along with that recording of an arrest, Leave Here Right Now may be the only satisfying outlet for those feelings.
Burke and DiMuzio have created and unfortunate, unpleasant, and necessary soundtrack to the distressing times. 8/10 -- Mike Wood (24 September, 2008)

Upcoming Events’ first impression is of post-millennial paranoia delivered with irony so heavy it could break some bones in your foot if you let it slip. The sleeve design depicts a bunch of cops in riot gear under a marquee trumpeting the title. The tracks have names like “Deregulation,” which tellingly slinks so slowly from silence into audibility that you might not notice it until something bad has happened, or “Freedom Fries.” Fortunately electronicists Dan Burke (of Illusion Of Safety) and Thomas Dimuzio understand the merits of balance, pacing and subtlety; it takes them over forty minutes to get around to confronting the listener with brute power, as personified by a sample of a cop busting a reporter who won’t move on. But quieter doesn’t mean easier; “Closed Circuit’s” layers of pulsing electronics are initially quite lulling, but tiny details gradually magnify, inviting you to wonder who’s turning up the telescope’s resolution.

Since 1983, Burke and his many conspirators under the IOS banner have over the course of 40+ releases traversed most every facet of the avant sound plane, from early industrial pop deconstruction to blindingly minimal sound art to densely surreal found-sound collage, creating uneasy music that is dense and dystopian and yet also beautiful.
