Tempo Adagio by James Armstrong
This new recording is a series of entirely improvised performances at a Yamaha C7 grand piano. Preparation over the previous year was based on works by Isaac Albéniz, Enrique Granados, and Ferruccio Busoni, with increasing emphasis on Olivier Messiaen, which has opened a new spectrum of sound. The composer's detailed treatise , "The Technique of My Musical Language", has led to certain insights, even if its practices weren't specifically designed for improvisers. In light of perceived formalism in modern music, the techniques look back to original sources of form and content; anything "new" evolves out of what went on before.
