Extinction (2010)
for amplified string quintet

The work is written as a text score, which includes the sounds of various birds that the musicians imitate when they perform. The text of the score was verbally prerecorded by the work's composer James Hullick and then played back to the musicians through headphones as they performed.

The first performance of the work was given by the BOLT Ensemble at Footscray Community Arts in a the outdoor amphitheatre in November 2010.

Online the works is divided into four parts, but in live performance the work is performed continuously as one large act.

Worldwide we have lost many bird species due to extinction caused by humans. But you knew that already. How has that knowledge activated us?

From the outside looking in, James Hullick's creativity seems boundless, manifesting sound worlds from inventive machines, art music, rock, electronics, acoustic instrumention, found objects, the human voice, sonic ensembles and the uncanny mergings of these things.
