Orchid Underneath by Jane Paknia

“Orchid Underneath" is a sonic collection and detailing of the eclectic experiences that shaped Jane into the musician she is–-growing up with the piano, trumpet playing in orchestras, meshing with the psych rock scene in high school, composing for and conducting 17-piece jazz ensembles, touring the world on synths accompanying an indie pop star, falling in love with imaginative pop and deciding to become a songwriter herself. It is also the by-product of her hope to become the musician she doubted she could, nodding in its title and central imagery to the beloved lilac color reminiscent of spring, and the mysterious, androgynous flower that is both ubiquitous and quite unknown. Both the orchid color and flower allude to a bloom, a new birth, a maturation of some kind, while “underneath” implies waiting, gathering resources, and soaking in potential under the surface until its time. An adventurous, brave introduction, “Orchid Underneath” is as singular as its creator, who, already skilled and accomplished in so much at a young age, lies at the precipice of an exciting artistic career.
