Complicity by John Russon Quintet

Jazz performance does not unambiguously divide into soloists and accompanists, for the act of accompanying, far from secondary, is often creatively decisive in shaping the music. The relation of instrumental voices is thus typically more matter of polyphony than harmony, and, rather than being distinguished as soloist and accompanist, all members might better be called accomplices, each contributing independently to a shared, creative activity. The music, like a woven fabric, might thus be called a work of complicity, a work of all folding together into something exceeding the voice of any of them.
