you find a fawn in an open field
through a pathway in the woods
its mother and father nowhere near
you take her with you home

you bottle feed her as she looks up
her eyes are green as hills
but she goes limp under your hands
so you rush back to the field

you find the patch of depressed grass
where she was calmly lying
and place her back onto the ground
but she bucks and kicks and cries

she stumbles, wretches, gasps for breath
as her mouth is turning white
and as you hold her in your hands
the christ dies

her mother and father return that night
and nudge her, but she won't rise
her eyes once green as hills
are now filling with flies
