Unheard Landscapes by Kaitie Sly

Unheard Landscapes is a compilation of 3 short soundscape compositions using field recordings acquired during 2018-2019 as part of a research creation project exploring inaudible human-generated noise in our everyday surroundings. In these compositions, you will hear infrasound and ultrasound transposed into the audible range so that it can be communicated to the listener in an impactful way. I combined unmanipulated audible sounds along with the manipulated inaudible sounds in a creative way that provided my audience with a more complete picture while also contextualizing the sounds. Making use of the parts of the user’s sensory system that they are actually consciously aware of (i.e. audible sound) helps bring attention to our biological sensitivities that might otherwise remain unconscious and thus “nonexistent.” In this way, I discovered art to provide a multi-media sensory solution that had a greater impact than raw data or mere text to communicate inaudible sound.

For nearly 30 years, Vancouver Island born bassist, Kaitie Sly, has worked as a session, touring and performing musician.

Her sophomore solo album, Forgotten Memoirs, will be released winter 2024. Her melodic basslines serve as the emotional anchor of her eclectic music, which combines elements of jazz, rock, and world music.
