With each track recorded in one take, the purpose of this EP was to capture the most honest and unaltered version of myself.


Liner Notes: The following EP contains all original pieces of mine featuring myself on trombone and Eric Johnson on tenor saxophone. Each track on this recording was inspired by a YouTube video of Softly, played by the amazing Ari Hoenig Quartet. I honestly spent a few months listening to this recording every day, as I fell in love with the communication, story, and motives behind the group’s playing and improvisation. It is ultimately what I aspire to be as a musician, and why I chose to major in Jazz Performance at the University of Nevada, Reno - I want to be someone people want to play with. In this YouTube video of Ari Hoenig, I gravitated to a great deal of rhythms and simple ideas played by the entire Ari Hoenig Quartet and obsessed over them. I transcribed whatever ideas and rhythms I liked, manipulated them, and ultimately reached a place where I had composed these motifs to be vamped and played freely over. I want this EP to capture the process of a music student in the University of Nevada, Reno’s jazz program – the process of obsessing and studying a piece to incorporate it into your own playing. Each track was recorded on the first take, as I approached the recording as an exercise, where the goal and focus is to be able to float over syncopated rhythms in a somewhat cohesive manner. The accompanying photos are places I went to here in Reno, while I was writing these pieces and creating this EP.
